Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear issued an executive order last week that allows low-speed
electric vehicles on the state’s roads. But out of the 2,464 miles of state-maintained roads, only 268 miles can be used for electric vehicles.
The impetus for the executive order was high gas prices. Although few electric vehicles are driven in Kentucky today, the governor wanted to give his constituents traveling options, should they wish to forgo their SUVs for golf carts, scooters, or some of the newer vehicles coming to the market, such as the one in the photo.
But fearing the slower-moving electric vehicles could cause accidents as fast-moving vehicles came across them, Governor Beshear opted to restrict road access for these vehicles to secondary roads with lower speed limits.
